Transforming labour and birth care

Imagine a labour and birth experience where every birthing family feels fully supported and respected from start to finish. Picture a birth team that listens attentively, encourages informed decision-making, and honors each individual's unique preferences and needs. Envision an environment where birthing families feel safe, empowered, and in control of their own birthing journey. This is our dream.

Birth is intense. It’s essential for us that our clients get personalized pregnancy & birth care that respects their autonomy. Rather than do things the typical way, we create care plans designed around our client’ needs.

FAQs

  • We are not able to be a primary provider of prenatal care because that is outside of the RN scope of practice. Our strength is in bridging the gap between what you need and want from your primary prenatal provider or birth team and the constraints that they may face due to policy, scheduling, or other systemic issues. If you would like to be followed by a physician or midwife during your pregnancy, please contact them directly or obtain a referral from your family doctor. We encourage a positive relationship with your provider in which your agency is respected and you are able to access the healthcare that you desire.

  • We are so happy that you do! A doula and a registered nurse (RN) have a different scope of practice, referring to what they are legally allowed to do. If you are able to, we highly encourage you to consider adding a doula to your team for in person support during your birth. Evidence shows that continuous support can decrease the risk of Cesarean, the use of medications for pain relief, and the risk of a low five minute Apgar score. Labour support also increases satisfaction and the chance of a spontaneous vaginal birth. The points below offer more information about the difference between an RN and a doula.

A doula is a source of physical, informational, and emotional support.

A doula is not a healthcare professional, and does not perform clinical assessments or interventions.

A doula is a peer support that accompanies the woman in labor, suggests comfort measures, and provides support and suggestions for the support person.

An RN is a self-regulated healthcare professional who works autonomously and in collaboration with others to enable individuals and families to achieve their optimal level of health.

An RN coordinates care and supports clients in managing their own health.

An RN has a holistic approach to care, addressing the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of clients.

An RN promotes client self-reliance and self-determination by actively involving the client as a partner in all aspects of care.

An RN is able to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document your plan of care to help meet your needs.

An RN offers health teaching and health promotion strategies to help you understand and make decisions about your care.

Depending on your needs and the type of experience you'd like, you can work with a doula, RN, or both! We are happy to be part of a collaborative care team.

  • Absolutely! Home, birth centre, midwifery clinic, or hospital! We can support your care goals no matter how you plan to birth or who your provider is. Our sessions are catered to your needs and reflect your planned birth environment. We are also able to facilitate your decision making for unique situations, such as a planned home birth transfer into hospital.

  • No, you do not need a physician or midwife referral to access a nurse consultant and book a session. This is an optional, private service that is not covered by provincial health plans.

Many extended health benefit plans may cover or partially cover the cost of professional services provided by an RN. Inquire with your insurance company about the details of your coverage. You may find it helpful to ask your provider for a referral to facilitate this process, but it is not required. In addition, services provided by an RN can be claimed as a Medical Expense Tax Credit when you file your income tax return. You can find more information here.
